Why Linux Mint?
Good question. There
are a number of great
GNU/Linux OS
distributions available,
probably none quite so
popular and influential
as Ubuntu. Ubuntu
arguably broke the mold
for providing an
intuitive GNU+Linux OS
that Microsoft Windows
users would feel right
at home in transitioning
to.
However, Ubuntu is
run by Canonical Ltd, a
for-profit company.
There is nothing
inheritly wrong with
that, however we feel
they have fallen to the
dark side: their most
recent Ubuntu releases
spy on and report your
search activity to
Amazon for ad revenue
(even when searching for
files on your own
computer), which is
exactly the kind of
thing that made us look
for an alternative to
Micrsoft's Windows in
the first place.
The answer to that
irony has come in the
form of Linux Mint,
which is an OS that is
sleek, updated, fully
featured, and based on
older builds of Ubuntu
that do not sacrifice
privacy for profit.
In addition, we at
Paramount Mint do hold
in high regard the Open
Source software model as
well as the Libre
Software movement. We
feel it makes economical
and moral sense to
promote software and
programs that do not
inhibit creative and
educational
opportunities behind
proprietary software
limitations or licence
agreements.
