Three decades ago the
ciy of Paramount seemed
doomed to a future of
urban decay, but the
area has seen a
significant turnaround
for residents and
businesses thanks in no
small part to the civil
and youth outreach
programs initiated by
the City Council. Great
strides have been made
in transforming "Little
Sinaloa" into a modern
city, but the population
at large remains to be
working-class families
with little access to
(or intimidated by)
technology.
One of our goals is
to remove that fear of
technology and spread
computers as educational
tools to as many
residents as possible.
It is not uncommon for
working-class residents
to have access to the
internet through
smartphones and tablets,
but they make poor
educational tools.
Smartphones and tablets
seem to promote a
culture of consumption
and distraction rather
than creativity and
learning.
"Fun fact:
Nothing typed by
someone's thumbs has
ever been important." -
Gin Rummy
Computers and laptops
open up a world of
creation, expression,
and productivity that
elude their handheld
counterparts, whether it
be typing up homework in
"LibreOffice", creating
art in "InkScape" or
"GIMP", or learning how
to code with
"Scratch".
That is why we
distribute computers
without asking for more
than $40 as a donation
per machine. Our hope is
that as residents become
more tech-savy, it will
lead to accelerated
growth and an
improvement in the
quality of life for the
community.
To further promote
the spirit of learning,
we are glad to provide a
desktop computer or
laptop to educators with
a requested donation of
$20 (limit 1 per
classroom).
